Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Proposed Installation of Daytime Running Lights in Vehicles at Selected Places
21 Apr 2023In Parliament
Ms Joan Pereira asked the Minister for Transport whether the Ministry will consider mandating the installation of daytime running lights in cars for the safety of motorists and pedestrians in places with less lighting in the daytime such as multi-storey carparks.
Reply by Minister for Transport S Iswaran:
1. The purpose of daytime running lights or daytime running lamps (DRLs) is to make the vehicle more easily visible during daytime driving. This is useful in countries that experience prolonged low visibility conditions in the day, such as during winter, and foggy conditions. We do not experience such conditions often so there is no strong need to mandate DRLs in Singapore. Nonetheless, there are quite a few car models that have DRLs installed. In dimly-lit environments such as multi-storey carparks and in other low visibility conditions such as heavy rain, motorists should ensure that their headlamps are switched on so that they are able to see the road clearly and can be seen by other road users.
